More Experimenting

I could go into oodles of detail about the process of getting this lighting the way I wanted it...but I don't think anyone wants to hear it and I don't care to have it in our family journal, so I won't. I will say that I am happiest with the lighting in the first two pictures (they are also the only ones I took the time to edit). If you click on the one of Estella, you can see the remnants of a pink crayon on her face. When you look closely at the others you may be able to see the subtle changes in lighting as I made changes to it. I put the here because I want to remember the sweet expressions and gestures of these angels I call my children.

I'm not exactly sure how or why, but Nicholas usually has his shirt on inside out or backwards. I am really not picky about it and don't correct it unless we are going somewhere we need to look presentable. This is a shirt that Thomas made for Nicholas when he went to Science camp last summer. Nicholas wears it with pride! I can't remember now how he got those scrapes on his face. Oh, I love this little boy!

Silhouette Profiles

This was part of the experimenting week with the softboxes.

I have since cut Nicholas' hair, I promise :)

Nicholas the Builder

I'm sure I have said this many many times, but Nicholas loves to build. When he is particularly proud of his work he requests a photo before demolition. Here are two he has done recently.

And...because no post is complete without a picture of the yummy little baby...

Berry Brothers

Oh how these boys LOVE their baby brother! During the day Alexander is sleeping in his crib that is stuffed in our master bedroom closet because it is quiet and free of intruders. At night I wake him up and feed him before I go to bed and then set him down for the night in the pack and play which is stuffed half-way inside the boy's bedroom closet. I sleep much better when he is not in my room, and the boys don't seem to even notice he is there...until the morning, that is. When the big boys wake up, they often both climb into the pack and play with baby A. Somehow they all squeeze in until they are all comfortably lying together. It melts my heart to see them like that!

Career Event

Jackson began working with Waddell and Reed (a financial planning/investment/insurance company) the beginning of this year. They encourage their new employees to have a "Career Celebration Event" to let their friends and family know what they are doing. We wanted to make it fun and worthwhile for those who took the time to come, so I did free family photos in the lobby and Jackson hired a fabulous sushi chef who made sushi while we watched. It was fun (a bit stressful for Jackson and I, but still fun). Here are a few "test shots" (unedited) that my sweet boys endured while I was setting up lights for the family photos. If you care to see any of the photos I took of the families you can see some of them on the blog http://www.jenniferberryphotography.blogspot.com and most of them on facebook. I am a bit facebook retarded. I have a profile for myself and for my photography stuff. I just created the photography one, but I have no idea if I need to have people "friend" me if they want to see the photos I put up there...I would love to know if anyone can actually find the pictures that are there.

Suzuki Book 1 recital

It is traditional when you are learning an instrument the "Suzuki way" that you do a recital after you finish each book. For those who aren't familiar with the Suzuki method, when you learn a song you don't pass it off and then stop playing it when you move on to the next song. You review and review and review. In fact, for us more practice time is spent reviewing than learning new music. This was foreign and new to me, but after going through it with Thomas I am 100% completely sold and convinced that it is a great way to go. I could go on about how and why, but I'll spare you :)

Thomas is actually almost through Book 2, but we just did his Book 1 recital. I am actually glad that we waited so long. It gave him a chance to more fully internalize and polish the pieces. He did a fantastic job and felt very good about his performance. I (as the accompanist) made more mistakes than he did by far! We held the recital at the Fountains where Grandma Berry lives. Unfortunately, she had been sick and the staff had quarantined her to protect the other residents, so she had to stay in her room. After the recital Thomas went and played a few songs for her in her room. Grandma Chelle, Bubba, Grammy, Uncle Judd, Newell, Brynne, Juliette, Aunt Julia, Ethan, Aiden, and our little family all attended. We also attracted a few passersby who stayed and enjoyed the music.

Thomas wrote a story with our help to make it a bit more fun for the audience. I'll add it here so we can remember it. The pieces he played are in parenthesis.

Once there was a farmer (Happy Farmer), we’ll call him Cliff. Cliff went to Thomas’s Book 1 recital to listen to Gavotte (Gavotte). He was so happy; afterward he did two dances (Minuet 1 and Minuet 3). That night he went camping by a little brook. As you know setting up camp involves a lot of back and forth, but for an experienced camper like Cliff it went smoothly (Allegretto). Before bed he looked up into the sky and saw his favorite star, the North Star (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star). While he was laying there looking at the stars, he heard something. When he looked he saw a fox. It was running like the wind (Song of the Wind). After he watched the fox, he lay there thinking of a time long ago (Long Long Ago). His thinking carried him off into dreamland and he had a pleasant dream about when he was a child (O Come Little Children). It was already mid-day when he awoke and he saw a grasshopper on a floating leaf in the brook by his camp site. It was floating away (Andantino). Cliff went out on his boat to follow the grasshopper (Lightly Row). The grasshopper was going very fast (Allegro). The farmer had to row quickly to catch up with him (Perpetual Motion). He bumped into a rock. His boat got a big hole in it and sank to the bottom of the brook. He swam to the shore and started walking home (Etude). As he was walking home, he was thinking about the good things about spring…birds and flowers (May Song). Springtime reminded Cliff of his Aunt Rhody, who loved yellow daffodils (Go Tell Aunt Rhody). His family was so happy when he returned home they all did a dance (Minuet 2).
The End

Good Job Thomas!

Soccer Diva

The boys are both getting very excited for the upcoming soccer season. Their practices start this week and the games begin next Saturday. Estella must be feeling the excitement, because after being alarmingly quiet for a longer time than usual, she walked out in this outfit.

21 Rules of This House

This book was recommended to me by a friend. When I got it I was a little bit sceptical because it didn't seem like anything special. We read through the rules during family home evening and picked one that we thought we could improve on as a family. I copied the coloring sheet and the kids colored the picture while we talked about how we could implement the rule. The first rule we chose was, "When we make a mess, we clean it up." Throughout the week, when I saw a mess I would just say, "When we make a mess..." and the kids would finish, "...we clean it up."

The next week we chose the rule, "When someone is sad, we comfort them." Later that week Estella was crying about something silly so I wasn't paying much attention to her. She whimpered, "Mommy...when someone is sad, we comfort dem." It was adorable.

The next week we chose, "We love, honor, and pray for one another." We focused on praying for each other's specific needs during prayers. It was beautiful to see the kids thinking about the needs of their siblings and praying for them.

This week we chose, "We speak quietly and respectfully with one another." I have a feeling the kids might have to remind me about this one a few times. I tend to get a bit short tempered when I am tired or hungry.

I am glad I bought the book and look forward to working through each of the "rules."

It sounds like angels

Today during Family Home Evening I asked Nicholas if he would play French Folk Song on his cello for us. He agreed. French Folk Song is Nicholas's absolute favorite song. It is as if that song is an expression of his soul. When he plays it or hums it magical things happen. He feels it with his entire being. He gets a quiet, pensive look on his face and concentrates fully on the music. It is hard to put into words. So tonight he began playing. About half-way through, he stopped and very seriously said, "It sounds like angels crying their joyness." And it did.
