21 Rules of This House

This book was recommended to me by a friend. When I got it I was a little bit sceptical because it didn't seem like anything special. We read through the rules during family home evening and picked one that we thought we could improve on as a family. I copied the coloring sheet and the kids colored the picture while we talked about how we could implement the rule. The first rule we chose was, "When we make a mess, we clean it up." Throughout the week, when I saw a mess I would just say, "When we make a mess..." and the kids would finish, "...we clean it up."

The next week we chose the rule, "When someone is sad, we comfort them." Later that week Estella was crying about something silly so I wasn't paying much attention to her. She whimpered, "Mommy...when someone is sad, we comfort dem." It was adorable.

The next week we chose, "We love, honor, and pray for one another." We focused on praying for each other's specific needs during prayers. It was beautiful to see the kids thinking about the needs of their siblings and praying for them.

This week we chose, "We speak quietly and respectfully with one another." I have a feeling the kids might have to remind me about this one a few times. I tend to get a bit short tempered when I am tired or hungry.

I am glad I bought the book and look forward to working through each of the "rules."

When we were in Fillmore Essie taught me the comfort rule:) Now I know where she got it. That sounds like a great book!
